Unclog an Oreck Magnesium Vacuum

Start by checking the most common clog location at the base intake. Flip the vacuum over and look into the intake opening.

1. Unplug the vacuum and flip it over to access the base.
2. Look into the intake opening where debris enters the machine.
3. If you can see a clog right there, try to pull it out with tweezers.

Remove the base plate to check for clogs in the sharp turn where debris enters the motor housing.

1. Remove the screws holding the base plate.
2. Lift off the base plate.
3. Look for clogs at the sharp turn where the intake channel meets the motor housing.
4. If you see a clog here, remove it with tweezers or a flat screwdriver.

The upper tube that connects to the bag can also get clogged, especially if the bag was overfilled.

1. Unhook the power cord from the upper handle.
2. Turn the knuckle joint to unlock the upper tube.
3. Pull the upper tube up and out of the housing (you may need to stand on the base and pull).
4. Look down the rigid tube for any visible clogs.
5. If you see a clog, use a flexible tool to push it out.

The most difficult clogs require accessing the fan housing area. This involves significant disassembly.

1. Remove both side rails by inserting two flat screwdrivers into the notches and twisting (or use channel lock pliers, though this may mark the plastic).
2. Pop off both wheels once the side rails are removed.
3. Remove the three Phillips screws holding the top piece.

4. Remove the two back screws holding the upper housing.
5. Unclip the small clip holding the upper housing.
6. Lift off the upper housing to expose the fan and motor area.
7. Locate the intake channel leading to the fan housing.
8. Remove the three screws around the fan housing intake.
9. Clear any debris from the fan housing area.

With the clog removed, reassemble any parts you removed and test the vacuum.

1. Reassemble all parts in reverse order of removal.
2. Ensure all screws are tightened and clips are secured.
3. Plug in the vacuum and turn it on.
4. Test suction on a small area of carpet.
