The Bissell Carpet Sweeper Company traces its roots to 1876 in Grand Rapids, Michigan, when Melville Bissell invented the carpet sweeper to clean sawdust from the floor of the family's crockery shop. His wife Anna helped build the business from day one, serving as chief saleswoman and overseeing supply and production, and her efforts helped land the product in early department stores and even in Queen Victoria's household.
When Melville died in 1889, Anna took over as CEO, notably becoming the first woman in America to head a registered company. Under her leadership the company grew into the world's largest carpet sweeper manufacturer, exporting across Europe and Latin America, and it remains family owned to this day.

We order our Bissell parts directly from Bissell, and they sell directly to consumers too, which already puts them ahead of brands that sell you a machine and then pretend parts are not a thing. The parts are genuine, and we can get them. The biggest hiccup is time. Waiting on Bissell parts is the slow spot in the whole operation, and that wait is exactly when we bridge the gap with aftermarket sources so a customer is not stuck without a vacuum. Now the limits. Age is the big one. Around eight years old and up, you are generally not getting parts for a Bissell at all. We had one come through recently where the motor was discontinued and we had nothing in our boneyard either, and that was the end of the road for that machine. Electronics are the other gap. When a brush roll stops spinning and the PCB board turns out to be the problem, Bissell does not always carry that board, and there is no fixing around a board you cannot buy. And the cord reel, one of their signature conveniences, no longer has repair components sold for it at all. So here is the honest picture. A current Bissell is well supported with genuine parts direct from the source, as long as you can wait on shipping. An aging Bissell is living on borrowed time, and the clock starts around year eight.
