VacuFlo Central Vacuums

VacuFlo was the first central vacuum built for houses, and it's still in production. HP Products in Ohio introduced it in 1955, which makes it the oldest central vac brand anyone is still making.

Where it came from

HP Products started in a garage in Louisville, Ohio, making things like gas burners and boat trailers. In the early 1950s they began bending tubing for the industrial vacuum systems used in hospitals and office buildings. Founder Harold Bishop figured the same idea would work in a house. Nobody else was doing it.

A fire took out their building in 1953. They rebuilt, and in 1955 they showed the first VacuFlo at the Chicago home builders' expo.

True Cyclonic

The original VacuFlo used no bag and no filter. Dirt spins out into a canister, and the fine dust that makes it past the cyclone gets blown outside instead of back into your house. That design is still sold today as VacuFlo True Cyclonic. For homes where venting outside isn't practical, VacuFlo also makes Filtered Cyclonic models like the FC550 and FC650.

A lot of central vac history started here

Plenty of what every brand uses today came out of HP. They pioneered plastic in wall tubing in the early 1960s, motors designed for central systems, and the Lexan inlet valve. In 1980, working with Black & Decker, they built the first air driven turbine powerhead for central vacs, the TurboCat Plus, then followed it with the RugRat hand tool in 1982. They've built central vacs for RVs since 1972.

Twin motor units like the Model 760 and the quieter Q series came later. Monty Hall even introduced VacuFlo on Let's Make a Deal.

Still built in Ohio

VacuFlo units are assembled in Canton, Ohio. HP Products also makes the Dirt Devil and Element central vac lines and a full catalog of hoses, retractable hose systems, and quick clean accessories. They were still filing patents on new inlet valves in 2025.
