Panasonic Corporation was founded in 1918 by Konosuke Matsushita in Osaka, Japan as the Matsushita Electric Housewares Manufacturing Works, and grew into one of the world's largest electronics conglomerates. Panasonic vacuum cleaners — both the consumer Performance and Platinum upright lines and the commercial canister and bagged-upright models — built a strong following in North America for the decade-plus they were widely sold here.

Panasonic exited the North American consumer vacuum market in the 2010s, but a long install base remains in service. Replacement bags (the U, U-2, U-3, U-6, U-12, and C-5 type bags), belts (UB-9, UB-11), brush rolls, and motors for the MC-series Panasonic uprights and canisters are still widely stocked through aftermarket suppliers and dealers.
