Dirt Devil started life in 1984 as a single product: a small, bagless handheld vacuum introduced by Royal Appliance Manufacturing of Cleveland, Ohio as a lower-cost mass-market companion to Royal's all-metal Prince hand vac. The little red Dirt Devil Hand Vac became the best-selling corded handheld of its era — over 23 million units sold — and its name eventually overtook the Royal brand it was created to support.

Royal Appliance was acquired by Hong Kong-based Techtronic Industries (TTI) in 2002 and folded into TTI Floor Care alongside Hoover. The Dirt Devil line today covers stick vacs, uprights, canisters, and handheld models aimed at quick everyday cleanups, and a deep back catalog of older Royal-era Dirt Devil models keeps the parts and accessory aftermarket one of the most active in floor care.
