Royal began as the P.A. Geier Company, founded in 1905 in Cleveland, Ohio, where Phillip A. Geier hand-built metal vacuum cleaners in a backyard garage. The "Royal" trademark was introduced in 1912, and Royal went on to introduce the industry's first handheld vacuum, the Royal Prince, in 1937. The company was renamed Royal Appliance Manufacturing in 1953.

Royal's all-metal uprights and Prince handhelds developed a loyal following among dealers and buyers who valued built-to-last construction. Royal Appliance was acquired by Hong Kong-based Techtronic Industries in 2002 and is now part of TTI Floor Care alongside Hoover and Dirt Devil. Replacement bags, belts, brush rolls, and motors for the long Royal model history — both the Prince handhelds and the metal upright commercial line — are still widely stocked.
