Maytag was founded in 1893 in Newton, Iowa by F.L. Maytag and is one of the most recognized American home-appliance brands, best known for laundry. Maytag entered the vacuum cleaner business briefly through its 1989 acquisition of Chicago Pacific Corporation, which gave it ownership of the Hoover floor-care division. Maytag itself was acquired by Whirlpool in 2006.

The Maytag vacuum line today is produced under license by Tacony Corporation in St. James, Missouri — the same plant that builds Riccar and Simplicity. The Maytag M500, M700, and M1200 uprights are American-made HEPA-filtered machines aimed at the dealer service channel, and they share parts (bags, belts, brush rolls, filters, motors) with Tacony's broader engineering platform.
